Tennis: Roland Garros - Top 3 tournament Sleepers

The Roland Garros is just around the corner and here are some of our top sleeper picks not named Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer that could surprise and win the tournament if they get hot during these 2 weeks.

With Roland Garros starting and a multiple of hot Tennis tournaments upcoming in the Summer such as Wimbledon and US Open, here’s a Tennis betting guide explaining its multiple markets including Outright markets. If you’re new to betting on this sport this could be helpful for you in the future!

Dominic Thiem

Dominic Thiem is arguably the most dangerous player outside of Djokovic and Nadal in this tournament and given his resume on Clay over his career you can see why. Dominic Thiem has won 13 career titles of which 9 have come on Clay. He has performed very well in recent years at Roland Garros reaching at least a Semi Final in 3 consecutive years and made a Final last year, however he’s not been able to get over that hump and win the tournament yet but by consistently making an improvement you’d have to say this year could definitely be Thiem’s year. Thiem possesses the best W/L percentage at Roland Garros compared to the other Grand Slams for his career at 78% (18-5).

Entering this tournament, Thiem is coming off a disappointing Madrid masters when he got bounced in the 1st match to Verdasco, however prior to that he did have a very impressive 8 game win streak in Barcelona and Madrid where he went on to win the Barcelona trophy and made a Semi Final in Rome where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Overall, Thiem has been quite inconsistent but when he’s gotten hot he’s been very good winning his first masters on the way, then as mentioned an ATP Barcelona title beating some very good players on the way including Nadal, however there’s also been tournaments like in Rio, Monte Carlo, Rome, Miami where he got bounced out very early. It really depends on what Dominic Thiem we will see, if he can turn up and perform at a high level then this is a player that could definitely surprise both Nadal and Djokovic and win the tournament.

In terms of performing against Nadal and Djokovic on Clay who will most likely be the main men standing in the way of Thiem and the Roland Garros trophy, Thiem has had some success. Despite having losing records against both (4-7 vs Nadal and 2-3 vs Djokovic) on this surface. Thiem has shown that he can beat both of them on his day and we could very well see that when he met Nadal just a few weeks ago in Barcelona beating him in straight sets. He has yet to beat Nadal in RG though losing all 3 meetings 3-0, but he has beaten Djokovic in the only meeting on Roland Garros 3-0.

Thiem is the 3rd favourite to win the French Open trophy tipped at the odds of 7.30 via Pinnacle

Juan Martin Del Potro

Juan Martin Del Potro is always a contender to win a Grand Slam whenever he’s healthy and after his performances in Rome last week where he pushed Novak Djokovic all the way to the limit, you can safely say that Del Potro should be ready for the tournament this year. Clay hasn’t been Del Potro’s most favourite surface, but he has performed well over his career on this surface when right. Over his Roland Garros career he has been to 1 Quarter Final and 2 Semi Finals including making the Semi Final last year before losing to eventual winner Rafael Nadal in straight sets and Del Potro has the tied 2nd best career Win/Loss percentage in Roland Garros at 70% (19-8) compared to the other 4 Grand Slams.

Entering this tournament, one concern that many will have with Del Potro is he hasn’t really played much Tennis since his injury in February from which he missed 3 months and after playing just 4 matches in Madrid and Rome some may believe that he won’t be ready to go all the way. Del Potro did have a solid tournament in Rome though bagging a couple of straight sets victories including one against David Goffin and taking Djokovic to 3 sets nearly defeating him and definitely looking like the pre-injury Del Potro.

Del Potro hasn’t really had any success against the top 2 tournament favourites on the Clay for his career. He’s 0-3 against Nadal (0-2 on RG) and 0-4 against Djokovic (0-1 on RG). Del Potro has caused problems for both of these players in their H2H matches over the years on different surfaces, but hasn’t been able to get over the hump against either one on Clay. He’s not been competitive against Nadal on this surface, but has caused Djokovic problems a couple of times despite not beating him on Clay. Despite him never being able to beat either one of these two players, there always is a first time and given Del Potro’s overall Tennis ability and the fact that he’s beaten both of the top 2 players on other surfaces before multiple times, it only is a matter of time before he does it on Clay. The question for Del Potro is, can he get to these final rounds and will he be fit enough to perform to his full capabilities because if he does then sky is the limit for the Argentinian.

Del Potro is offered at 11.76 to win the Roland Garros title via Pinnacle.

Stefanos Tsitsipas

The 20 year old Stefanos Tsitsipas has really established himself as one of the best players in the world despite his young age over the past year. 2 Masters Finals, beating multiple top tier players and his first career trophy over the last 9 months has elevated him as our 3rd sleeper that could win this tournament if he gets hot. Tsitsipas has only participated in Roland Garros once in his career which was last year and got eliminated in the 2nd round against Dominic Thiem in a match he didn’t disappoint himself considering he took a set and competed well against Dominic.

Tsitsipas has had a good year on Clay this season with a 13-4 record an ATP Estoril title and a Rome Masters Final appearance on which way he defeated Rafael Nadal and only ended up losing to Novak Djokovic, it is fair to say that Stefanos is a good performer on Clay and surface shouldn’t be a problem for him at Roland Garros. Tsitsipas has beaten some very good players on this surface not only Nadal, but also the likes of Zverev, Goffin and Fognini who has a Masters title of his won this year on Clay. A concern for Tsitsipas entering this tournament is he is yet to have a big time Grand Slam performance not being able to go further than 4th round in Wimbledon last year, but given his talent it’s only a matter of time before he makes a deep run in a Grand Slam and this tournament could very well be the one.

Tsitsipas has already faced Nadal and Djokovic on Clay, he’s 1-2 against Nadal (1-1 this year) showing that he has the capability to beat him on Clay, but not yet played in a best of 5 and he’s 0-1 against Djokovic losing the Rome Final this year also haven’t faced him in a best of 5 yet. Whether Tsitsipas has the talent to make it tough on the top contenders in this tournament is definitely yes, but whether lack of experience will hold him back we will have to wait and see. Tsitsipas is arguably the most dangerous Next Gen player in this tournament and that includes Zverev.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is offered at Odds of 17.21 to lift the Roland Garros trophy via Pinnacle.
