PRIME Minister Julia Gillard says she is "sickened" by a report that has found many Australian sportspeople have been taking banned substances and have links to organised crime.

The Australian Crime Commission (ACC) on Thursday identified widespread doping in professional sport, along with possible match-fixing and manipulation of betting markets.

Ms Gillard, who is in Queenstown for bilateral talks with New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, said it was a dark day for Australian sport.

"We are people who go and sit at grounds or watch sport on TV and marvel at amazing sporting prowess," she told reporters.

"We cheer on the deeds, and the sense that anything we've seen has actually been fuelled by banned substances would be pretty sickening for sports fans. It's pretty sickening for me."

Sports bosses have criticised a lack of detail in the report, saying it has tarred all athletes with the same brush.

Ms Gillard said she understood the public's desire for more information, but it was up to the ACC to decide its next steps.

The New Zealand government on Friday ordered its own reports from three sporting bodies, to determine whether any New Zealanders or teams playing in Australian sports leagues were implicated in illegal practices.

Ms Gillard will discuss the report with Mr Key on Saturday morning, and Australian Sports Minister Kate Lundy has spoken with her counterpart, Murray McCully, about it.

Mr Key said his government was taking the report very seriously.

"We've got no particular reason to believe there are issues, but obviously we play Australasian-type sporting events so, therefore, we can't rule it out."

He said the integrity of sport was very important and if New Zealand sportspeople were taking banned substances or participating in match-fixing, the public would be "shocked, stunned and extremely disappointed".

England hit 15 sixes and beat their record Twenty20 score as they crushed New Zealand by 40 runs in the first Twenty20 international in Auckland.

England capitalised on short boundaries at Eden Park, with Eoin Morgan striking 46 from 26 balls, Luke Wright 42 from 20 and Jonny Bairstow 38 from 22. Jos Buttler added 32 from 16 to see England to 214-7 and beat their 202-6 against South Africa in 2009.

Captain Stuart Broad took 4-24 as New Zealand finished on 174-9.

England, having been put in to bat in the first of three internationals, looked on course for a big total from the start.

New Zealand dropped five catches, with former captain Ross Taylor missing two chances on his return to the team, as the hosts struggled to defend the small boundaries.

Alex Hales launched the first six of the innings high over deep midwicket in the second over and when he was stumped off Ronnie Hira for 21, Wright quickly found his range as England hit 21 runs off the spinner's second over. Michael Lumb had made only three - albeit from just six balls faced - in England's first 50 runs, but he joined in with a swept four and straight six off Hira.

Taylor, back for his first international match since being relieved of the New Zealand captaincy and then sitting out the tour of South Africa, dropped Wright at cover off Nathan McCullum and then let Lumb off when he skied Andrew Ellis to deep midwicket.

Wright, who fired four sixes in a belligerent innings, was caught deep on the offside off Andrew Ellis before Lumb, on 22, miscued an attempted hook to short fine-leg.

But New Zealand's mistakes in the field continued to cost them. Hira dropped Bairstow on 22, but the most glaring miss was by Mitchell McClenaghan who appeared not to see the ball properly at short third-man when he put down Morgan on 33 off McCullum. Morgan, having cleared the ropes three times, miscued Hira to give Taylor an unmissable opportunity and Bairstow, who blasted two sixes, found Martin Guptill at long-on off Boult.

But Buttler ensured England surged past 200 with some impressive blows.

New Zealand lost debutant Hamish Rutherford, son of former Test batsman Ken, to Broad and then their own skipper Brendon McCullum to a superb back-pedalling catch from Morgan off Finn for 10.

Taylor received a warm welcome when he came out to bat but his innings was brief and he was out for 13.

Guptill played with aggression, making 44 from 32, but England, with Broad and Steven Finn (3-39) finding extra bounce, took regular wickets to keep the hosts in check and secure an emphatic victory.

The England skipper, who has expressed concerns about a heel injury , finished with 4-24, his best T20 international figures, while Wright took 2-29 and added a catch.

Bradley Smith believes he can challenge for a place in the top five as he prepares for his debut MotoGP season.

Smith, 22, will ride for the Tech 3 Yamaha team this year after stepping up from the Moto2 championship.

He told BBC Sport: "Looking at what Stefan Bradley did in his first year up last year, in that seventh to fifth area, I would like to think I have got that type of result in me.

"It's a realistic focus, a very hard one to achieve, but I believe in it."

Smith is team-mate to fellow Briton Cal Crutchlow this year and makes the move up after two seasons at Moto2 level for the Tech 3 team. The Oxford-born rider managed two podiums in Moto2 in 2011 but could only manage a best finish of fourth last season.

He believes the performances of 2011 Moto2 champion Bradl in MotoGP last year - with the German impressing on his way to four top-five finishes on his LCR Honda - show that riders can adjust quickly to life in the top class.

He said: "If I could emulate anything close to Bradl in his first year I would be chuffed.

"There are three rookies coming up from Moto2 this year in Marc Marquez, Andrea Iannone and myself. That gives me two riders who I know well to base myself on."

Smith impressed in the pre-season test in Sepang last week, ending the week in eighth place, ahead of both factory Ducati riders.

He admits he is still getting used to the power of his MotoGP machine, and credits his strong start to a 15-month fitness regime which he started after signing his Tech 3 deal in 2011.

He said: "It's all about learning to cope with the power.

"My Moto2 bike was capable of 170mph on a good day and the MotoGP bike is pushing 220mph - quite a difference. One of the biggest things is the speed that you enter the corners. You come in at 180mph and use carbon brakes to try and stop in time. "Throw in the 20 best riders in the world and it makes my job difficult.

"But from the moment I signed a contract in 2011 my training changed a lot. A motorcycle at that speed has a lot of mass and to hold on to it as it accelerates and throw around a 155kg machine is different.

"I am getting there. I'm a lanky scrawny kid so I have to put a lot of work in the gym. You almost want to be like a gymnast.

"You don't want to be big and bulky as you need to be aerodynamic and agile."

US media are reporting that cyclist Lance Armstrong is facing a fresh federal investigation after admissions he took performance-enhancing drugs.

Attorney Andre Birotte, who oversaw an earlier inquiry, had said a previous decision not to prosecute still stood.

However, ABC News reports that: "Agents are actively investigating Armstrong for obstruction, witness tampering and intimidation".

It adds that Birotte "does not speak for the federal government as a whole".

Armstrong made the confession that he had taken performance-enhancing drugs during all seven of his Tour de France wins in an interview with Oprah Winfrey last month.

Legal experts said Armstrong exposed himself to possible charges of perjury or obstruction of justice.

But of the case he investigated, Birotte said: "We made a decision on that case a little over a year ago.

"Obviously, we've been well aware of the statements that have been made by Mr Armstrong in other media reports. That does not change my view at this time."

Regardless of any fresh charges, Armstrong still faces a stream of legal worries.

He is being sued for £6.9m by a US insurance company, and around £1m by the Sunday Times.

There is also an ongoing "whistleblower" case involving former teammate Floyd Landis, who was stripped of his own 2006 Tour de France victory. That suit could see the US federal government reclaim money used to fund Armstrong's US Postal Service team, with Landis possibly receiving 25% of any amount recovered under the Federal False Claims Act.

Once again California State Senator Roderick Wright has introduced a sports betting bill for the state’s legislature to consider. The bill is the same as last year’s version which failed to pass.

Should the bill pass it would allow card clubs, casinos and horse racing tracks to accept bets on sporting events.

The bets would have to be made in person and no internet or phone betting would be allowed.

The bill deals with the problem of federal law by saying that it would wait until the federal law banning sports gambling in most states is repealed or ruled unconstitutional.

This means that if the bill passes sports betting would not be immediately available. However, Senator Wright believes that it is important that the state be ready to enter the market as soon as possible.

It is not yet known if the bill will receive any debate or die as quietly as it did last year. Senator Wright is also the sponsor of an online poker bill that has been introduced to the state legislature.

Unfortunately for betting fans though, the bills are likely to be met with just as much opposition as they were last year.

South African Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius has been arrested by South African police for allegedly shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home in Pretoria, local media are reporting.

Pretoria police have confirmed that a 30-year-old woman has died after being shot this morning at the home of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius in the Silver Lakes area of Pretoria. A 26-year-old man has been arrested, a police spokeswoman confirmed, with local reports claiming the person is Pistorius.

Local radio and online newspaper reports said the sprinter may have shot her after mistaking her for an intruder, but no details could be confirmed. A spokeswoman for Pretoria police declined to confirm the identity of the man in custody. "I can confirm that a woman has been fatally wounded in a shooting at Oscar Pistorius' house," she said. "A 26-year-old man has been taken into custody. The incident happened at 3am. We received a call and attended the scene. The call did not come from the man in custody but from another person. Currently there is an inquiry into what happened."

Johannesburg's Talk Radio 702 said Pistorius was understood to have shot his girlfriend in the head and arm, although the circumstances surrounding the incident were unclear. He may have mistaken her for a burglar, the radio report said. South Africa has some of the world's highest rates of violent crime and some home-owners carry weapons to defend themselves against intruders.

Pistorius, known as Blade Runner thanks to the carbon fibre prosthetic blades he wears to race is the world's best-known Paralympic star. The sprinter - who was born without a fibula in both legs and had his legs amputated as a 11-month-old - made history at London 2012 when he became the first double amputee to run in the Olympics and Paralympics, running in the 400m and 4x400m relay. During and after the competition he regularly tweeted pictures of he and his girlfriend together.

The Johannesburg-born athlete won a legal battle over his blades with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in 2008 for the right to compete in able-bodied competition.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says his team can overturn a 2-0 deficit when they meet Zenit St Petersburg in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.

Zenit defeated the Reds in the first leg on Thursday thanks to two goals in two second-half minutes.

"There is no way the tie is over - we are more than capable of getting the goals back," said Rodgers.

"What gives us hope is that we created enough to win the game." Liverpool's Luis Suarez was guilty of squandering several chances; missing from five yards and failing to hit the target despite being clean through in the first half. He also shot wide on two other occasions.

"He could have had a hat-trick by half-time," added the 39-year-old manager. "It wasn't his night but he's been brilliant for us all season."

Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti echoed Rodgers's sentiments, warning his team that Liverpool's fans were capable of inspiring their side to victory.

"During the first half we had a number of opportunities - as well as our opponents - and in the second half we managed to convert those opportunities into goals," he said.

"The tie is far from over. We're going to Anfield. It's the place where the hosts' fans become monsters, the players become really up for the fight."

Meanwhile, Rodgers thanked Zenit fans for creating a "wonderful atmosphere" inside the stadium.

Liverpool had written to European football's governing body Uefa and the Russian club "expressing their concerns" over the potential threat of racist abuse.

In December, a Zenit fans' group called for non-white and gay players to be excluded from the team.

Rodgers said: "I can only thank the club for how we've been received.

"I read and heard a lot about Zenit St Petersburg as a club, city and people before we got here.

"There were no problems at the game, it was a wonderful atmosphere and we want to thank the people of Zenit and Russia."

The top sides tend to play their best towards the end of a tournament but in the case of the New Zealand women's cricketers, they saved their worst until last.

The White Ferns lost to England by four wickets in last night's playoff for third and fourth at the women's World Cup. It was their third-straight defeat on the back of Super Six losses to the West Indies and England and they leave the tournament in India with a heavy sense of disappointment after targeting at least a place in the final.

New Zealand haven't won a one-day World Cup since 2000 when they triumphed on home soil and they finished runner-up in three consecutive World Cups across both forms of the limited overs game in 2009 and 2010.

"I think the last three games, we probably played our worst cricket which is what we will probably remember from the tournament,'' captain Suzie Bates said. "The game against West Indies, where we lost, hurt us badly and we didn't play well enough.''

The West Indies, who have been the surprise packets at the World Cup, play Australia in Sunday night's (NZT) final. Australia will be favourites, even though the West Indies won the Super Six match between the two sides.

New Zealand posted 220- for eight in their 50 overs against England, with Amy Satterthwaite following up her century against the same opposition two days previously with 85 from 95 balls.

She didn't really find any significant support, with four players achieving scores of 20 or more , and in the end they were about 30 runs short of a challenging total.

Bates chipped in with 21, taking her overall tally for the tournament to 401 runs at an average of 67.83, and she still holds an 82-run lead over Stafanie Taylor (West Indies) as the tournament's leading runscorer.

England were largely comfortable throughout their chase thanks to an unbeaten 106 from English captain Charlotte Edwards who scored a record-equalling eighth one-day international ton in what might be her last World Cup game.

Sarah Taylor (26), Lydia Greenway (31) and Arran Brindle (27) helped England to 199-3 and, although they lost three wickets in three runs, cruised to the target with three overs to spare.

Opening bowler Sian Ruck was tidy with 2-20 off her 10 overs and Lucy Doolan finished with 3-50.

Stoke forward Michael Owen talks about his "frustrating" first season at the Britannia, which has yielded only six Premier League substitute appearances and just one goal.

The 2001 Ballon d'Or winner speculates that being "thrust into every game for club and country" early in his career might have contributed to his injury-hit later years.

The 33-year-old former England striker reflects on a career working with the "fantastic" Gerard Houllier, says his association with Sir Alex Ferguson was "a dream come true" and describes Glenn Hoddle as "tactically one of the best".

WRESTLING IS the oldest Olympic competition, a tradition harking back to the original Greek contests — which is one reason why the International Olympic Committee’s recommendation to eliminate wrestling from the Summer Games beginning in 2020 came as an unwelcome shock to the sports world. But history isn’t the only reason why the IOC should reconsider its decision when it meets again in May in Russia. Under any objective criteria, wrestling should stay.

While sports such as beach volleyball might baffle the ancient Greeks, it’s reasonable for the Olympic committee to update its roster of events over time; the games need appeal to new generations of athletes. For 2020, the IOC wanted to free up a spot for a new sport and allow plenty of time for international competitions beforehand. The criteria the committee used in deciding which sport to eliminate ranged from television ratings to ticket sales.

There is a lot of speculation, given previous accusations that IOC members are easily bought, that the vote was corrupt. Regardless, it’s difficult to comprehend: Wrestling showed healthy ticket sales in the 2012 London Olympics, scored higher than the modern pentathlon on most measures used by the committee, and has more depth than other sports under consideration for the chopping block, such as synchronized swimming and (who knew?) trampoline.

The vote will be revisited later this year. There will be lots of jockeying, as various sports federations attempt to protect their spots. But if anything should move the Olympic committee, it’s the fact that there are 167 active national federations who compete on the mat — a far greater number than most other sports. Wrestling is one of the world’s oldest sports, and it still brings nations together. It’s a part of the Olympic spirit that should be preserved.
