In 1970, Benny Binion gathered a number of skilled poker players from all over the United States. The idea was to let them play each other in public to see who the best poker player in the world would be. Benny named the event the World Series of Poker and it was held at Binions Horseshoe in Las Vegas, where it has been held ever since. The game they played was No Limit Texas Hold'em and the players put up 10000 dollars each. That year the crowd got to choose which player they thought was the best one. The votes fell on Johnny Moss and he became historic as the first world champion of poker.

The following year the series was held again, this time under a new structure. The so-called freezeout structure where the players knock each other out until only one player still stands. The player to survive all the others was Johnny Moss and he was crowned the world champion of poker again.

After the launch in 1970 the interest and number of participants have steadily increased. In 1972, Thomas "Amarillo Slim" Preston won the event that had 8 participants. A win that gave him 80 000 dollars because the rule said winner takes it all. In 2000 when Chris Ferguson won the event the number of participants was 519 and the first price gave him 1, 5 million dollars.

In 2004 an incredible number of 2576 players fought for the coveted world champion title. First price was 5 million dollars. This explosion in number of players was due to the fact that online poker for a couple of years had established itself in millions of homes around the world and even more important it had spawned a World Champion in the form of Chris Moneymaker who won the championship in 2003. His entire entry fee to enter the championship thru online poker had been 39 dollars and the win gave him 2.5 million dollars.

This amazing story had its clear effect around the world and the number of participants tripled between 2003 and 2004. During the first two years there was only one event, the championship. But in 1972 one more event was added, a five-card stud event. Since then more events have been added each year. In the 2004 World Series of Poker a number of 33 events were held, including the championship event. They varied from 7 card stud hi/lo, Omaha pot limit, Texas Hold’em limit, pot limit, no limit and other kinds of poker such as razz and lowball. They all had one thing in common. The winner of each event got a precious World Series of Poker Bracelet. Today one of the most prestigious prices there are in the poker community.

The leadership in number of acclaimed bracelets is split between legendary players Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan who each hold 9 bracelets. The 2004 World Series meant an end to the Horseshoe era. It was the last time the Horseshoe would be holding the event. In the future it will be held at The Rio hotel and casino in Las Vegas.
