State lotteries also now have interest in the outcome of US online gambling laws. This past year, several different states have complained that credit card companies have blocked online subscriptions to their lotteries because of the UIGEA. Lotteries are supposed to be exempt from the law, but credit companies have been unable to decipher payments to lotteries from those going to online gambling sites.

Ukrainian casino owners and employees on Monday protested a bill that would temporarily ban gambling, saying it would put tens of thousands of people out of work and calling for a gradual approach toward greater state regulation of the industry.
The bill, approved Friday by Parliament, would shut all casinos and slot machine-machine parlors nationwide pending passage of separate legislation expected to restrict gambling to a special zone that would be established in one part of the France-sized country. Parliament has not yet considered that legislation.

Harrah's Entertainment has registered to lobby for the first time, and it is largely because they are in favor of legalized Internet gambling. The company has spent over $400,000 in the first quarter of 2009 on lobbying efforts.
(Harrah's has already set up online sites that will be ready to go if the laws are changed. Of course, they would have to be one of the companies chosen to obtain a license, but given their history and the government's likely decision to keep the jobs in the US, that seems like a foregone conclusion).

Internet gambling around the world is growing in record numbers, and in the UK, there is statistical data that backs up that claim. A survey published by the UK Gambling Commission reports the details.
Last year, 7.8% of all respondents claimed that Internet gambling was their choice for remote gaming. This year, that figure increased to 8.2%. While it is not a monumental increase, it does show how more people are moving to the Internet for their gambling.
