Here we are! The US Open Final. We have a great one here with two players playing their best tennis of the year in Del Potro and Djokovic. Both players have looked dominant throughout the tournament each beating some really good competition on the way. This match has all the credentials to become a classic so let’s get into some key facts about these players.

Key Facts

Del Potro is arguably playing his best tennis of his career, he’s currently world no3 which is career high and during this US Open he’s been playing on a whole new level.

This is Del Potro’s 2nd career grand slam final, the previous also being at the US Open in 2009 where he defeated Federer.

Del Potro is 32-6 on hard courts this year

Novak Djokovic leads the H2H against Del Potro 14-4 (10-3 on Hard Courts)

This is the third time that Djokovic and Del Potro are meeting at an US Open, Djokovic having won the previous two meetings in 2007 and 2012 in straight sets.

7 of the past 10 meetings between these players had both of them winning a set. Djokovic may dominate the win-losses column but the matches are often close, especially recently.

This is Djokovic’s 8th US Open Final. He’s actually got a losing record at US Open finals being 2-5.

Road to the Final

Del Potro: Del Potro has been dominant on his road to the Final beating some really good competition on the way. He started off by dismantling Donald Young in straight sets 6-0 6-3 6-4. Then he played Denis Kudla and once again DelPo looked very dominant beating him 6-3 6-1 7-6 it was a little tougher but Del Potro was never in doubt in that match either. In the third round the competition level got a lot stronger with Verdasco. However, Del Potro again won in straight sets 7-5 7-6 6-3 but it was not an easy match by any means. In the fourth round Del Potro faced a young star Borna Coric where again Del Potro was dominant winning 6-4 6-3 6-1. Del Potro then had his toughest match of the tournament where he dropped his only set against Isner where he won 6-7 6-3 7-6 6-3 and finally in the Semi Final Del Potro beat Nadal 7-6 6-2 0-0 (Nadal had to retire). Del Potro may have been a little lucky that Rafa wasn’t 100% but he still is a worthy winner of that match as he proved it on the court. Del Potro had only dropped one set throughout the whole tournament, he’s won 17 out of 18 sets and beat some really good competition on the way. This is arguably his best career tournament if he wins it, form wise this could eclipse his 2009 run. Del Potro will be very confident heading into the Final.

Djokovic: Well for Djokovic, he gradually improved as the tournament went on. In the first two rounds he dropped a set each against Fucsovics and Sandgren. Weirdly enough Djokovic was at one point tipped the underdog against Fucsovics as he was down a break in the 3rd set with the score tied 1-1 but 10 straight won games allowed Djokovic to get away with a win. From the 3rd round on Djokovic has been pretty much flawless winning all 4 matches in straight sets. First he dismantled Gasquet 6-2 6-3 6-3, then Sousa 6-3 6-4 6-3, in the quarter Final he beat the surprise of the tournament Millman 6-3 6-4 6-4 and in the Semi Final he put in a flawless performance (one of his best this year) as he destroyed Nishikori 6-3 6-4 6-2. Djokovic has absolutely peaked throughout the tournament and is playing at the same high level as he did in 2015-2016. He will be very confident that he can take the Final against a player who he’s had great success against in recent years even when he wasn’t at his best.

Betting Tips and Predictions

These two normally produce high quality matches and we should be expecting nothing else here. Djokovic likes to lift his level of play according to competition and in recent years we’ve seen in many many times in Finals when he plays either Federer, Nadal or Murray in this case it will be Del Potro. This match totally has potential to be a classic final, we expect a total over 40.5 Games (priced at 1.90) and a separate Djokovic over 21 games Won at 1.80 since we expect Novak to win and to have 4 or 5 sets plus there’s a high possibility for tie breaks. Del Potro will definitely give Djokovic a very tough Final because he’s in fantastic form but essentially we believe Novak will come out on top as he normally does when these two meet.
