UEFA Nations league: Portugal v Netherlands Betting Preview

Hosts Portugal take on the rejuvenated Netherlands in the first ever Nations League Final in hopes of securing their 2nd title in 3 years!

Both teams are coming into the Final on the back of a 3-1 wins in the Semi Finals. Portugal dispatching Switzerland 3-1 after a Ronaldo hattrick while Netherlands took down England 3-1 after Extra Time!

Portugal are coming into this Final having not lost a single competitive game since the World Cup. Portugal have played 7 competitive games since last summer (UENL, EURO Qual) and have won 3 of those while drawing 4. Although they have just had a run of 4 straight draws, Portugal have proven to be a very tough side to beat despite not playing their best football. Portugal have not lost a competitive game to a European side since 2016 when they lost 2-0 to Switzerland in the WC Qualifiers.

As for Netherlands, they are playing some great stuff for some time now. Having to play the likes of France, Germany, England in their last 7 competitive games, they’ve only tasted 2 defeats while going on to win 4 of those (incl ET) with 1 draw. Netherlands have shown great goal scoring form in the run scoring 2+ goals in 5 straight games. The Dutch have well and truly established themselves as one of the best national teams in the world again with their fantastic play!

Portugal have been near untouchable at home over the past few years. No defeats since September 2014 (0-1 to Albania) and in the 13 games since they have won 10 while drawing 3 in front of their fans though 3 of those draws did come in their last 4 games they have proven to be unbeatable here for 5 years now. Portugal have also been very good defensively at home keeping 7 clean sheets and conceding just 6 goals in their last 13 games here.

Netherlands have not had much success on their travels when it comes to winning games bar the 3-1 win against England. Netherlands last away win in 90 mins occurred in 2017 against Belarus failing to win their next 6 games although 3 of those were friendlies and 4 did end with draws after 90 mins. They have shown a knack for come backs though as in their last 6 games away from Netherlands they have fell 1-0 behind in all of them drawing 4 of those (one turning into win after ET) while winning 1 and losing just 1. Netherlands have gotten on the scoresheet in 9 straight away games.

Cristiano Ronaldo without a doubt is a player to watch for Portugal. Another hattrick scored in the Semi Final, he’s their all time goal scorer with 88 goals and as we all know he loves big games.

Memphis Depay is the man to watch for Netherlands. Despite not his best season for Lyon, his form for the Netherlands is at his all time best. 5 goals 5 assists in his last 6 competitive match apps for his country and he delivered 2 assists against England to help the Dutch reach the Final. He’s their biggest goal threat.

Portugal have had the edge over Netherlands in recent competitive match H2H. Portugal have won 3 straight competitive matches against the Dutch dating back to 2004 Euros, 2006 World Cup and 2012 Euros which all knocked Netherlands out of these tournaments. Portugal last faced the Netherlands in a competitive match at home in the 2004 Euro Semis and won 2-1. They most recently faced in a friendly in 2018 and Netherlands did surprisingly win 0-3 here however.

Portugal are tipped as slight favourites to win this match in 90 mins at 2.41 whereas Netherlands to win is 3.44 with Draw offered at 3.12. Portugal are 1.775 to lift the trophy, Netherlands are 2.15. The odds are based on Pinnacle.

Team News

Portugal: The hosts don’t have any fresh injury concerns, could field the same team or a very similar to the one in the Semis.

Netherlands: No fresh injury concerns, may see rotation but don’t expects crazy amount of changes from the Semi Final match against England.
