2019 DFL-Super Cup – Dortmund vs Bayern Munich Preview

The German football season curtain raiser is here and we have the top 2 Bundesliga sides face off for the title as double winners Bayern Munich take on rivals Borussia Dortmund!

After a very close title race last season that went onto the last day, Borussia Dortmund will look to finally take the final step of knocking Bayern off the throne in Germany this season.

Having blown a 9 point lead and coming up short by 2 points, many would say Dortmund blew it last season. However with signings like Thorgan Hazard, Nico Schulz, Mats Hummels, Julian Brandt and bringing Paco on a permanent deal, many say that Dortmund could be the team that end Bayern’s dominance in German football this season!

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich officially start a new era. With Robben and Ribery bidding farewells, the club will be looking to begin what looks to be a new chapter. Bayern haven’t had the best of transfer windows even after a bit of an up and down season in which they still managed the league/cup double (yes the standards are that high at Bayern).  Two defenders have come in with Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard. However, it is safe to say that Bayern haven’t had the best window when it comes to signings attacking players as they missed out on wonderkid Hudson Odoi, but are still within negotiations of Leroy Sane but for now it hasn’t been the best of summers for Bayern who are clearly in need of more fresh blood.

This is going to be the first official game of the season for both sides. Dortmund are coming off a solid pre-season winning all 5 games while scoring 24 goals (3+ goals in every game). Their most notable wins are 3-2 against Liverpool and beating Udinese away 1-4. Going forward they’ve been ruthless, but defensively a little shaky only keeping 1 clean sheet which could be a worry considering their poor defence let them down in the title race last season.

Bayern played 5 pre-season games against some very high level opposition. They won 3 beating Real Madrid 3-1, Fenerbache 6-1 and AC Milan 1-0, they drew with Tottenham 2-2 (lost on pens) and their lone defeat came in the first pre-season game to Arsenal 2-1. Bayern have seemingly gotten better as the games gone by and are on pretty decent form entering this game, though defence is a slight concern they are banging goals for fun like Dortmund.

Player to watch for Dortmund is Marco Reus. Arguably their best player, he looks healthy and is coming off a fantastic season scoring 21 goals in 36 Apps while providing a solid amount of  assists last season.

For Bayern, the man to watch is of course Robert Lewandowski. He just scores goals for fun, another amazing season last year scoring 37 goals and will likely continue to score at high rate again this season. Lewandowski scored in each of his last 2 DFL-Super Cups including a hattrick last year against Frankfurt.

This match will be played at the Signal Iduna Park which makes this a home game for Dortmund. Dortmund did beat Bayern 3-2 last season here, however looking overall recently Bayern have had a lot of success here only losing 1 of the 6 previous match to that including bagging 3 wins and beating Dortmund in 2 consecutive super cups despite playing away.

Bayern and Dortmund have provided us with some insanely high scoring games in recent memory as last 8 overall H2H matches have had 33 goals (4.12 per game) with 7 of them having over 3.5 goals! This is an encounter that SCREAMS GOALS!

This will be the 7th meeting between these clubs in the Super Cup with the previous 6 being split as Dortmund won 3 and Bayern won 3. There have been 24 total goals scored (4 per game) in these 6 meetings yet again showing that these clubs like to put on a show in their Super Cup meetings as well.

Bayern are tipped as favourites to win this match in 90 mins at 2.04 with Draw tipped at 3.85 and Dortmund to win being 3.30. Bayern to lift the trophy is 1.65 and Dortmund are priced at 2.25 to lift the trophy. The odds are based on Unibet.

Team News

Borussia Dortmund: Dortmund will be without the new signing Julian Brandt. Thorgan Hazard could also be out alongside Dan-Axel Zagadou. Otherwise everyone are likely to be available.

Bayern Munich: Last years player of the season for Bayern Serge Gnabry is a doubt after picking up a knock while Kingsley Coman and new signing Theo Hernandez are questionable for what is otherwise the full strength squad.
