Bundesliga: Werder Bremen vs Dortmund Betting Preview

Borussia Dortmund’s title chase continues as they travel to face Werder Bremen in what is an absolute must win game for the visitors.

Currently looking at the table, both sides are still playing for something. Bremen are 9th but are just 4 points off 7th and 5 points off 5-6th placed teams which could earn them a Europa League spot if they were to get there. Meanwhile, as mentioned Dortmund are still within reach of 1st place despite the loss last week as they are just 2 points off Bayern. With 3 games to go, both sides will definitely be needing a win if they want to continue to have a shot at achieving these targets.

This could be a high scoring fixture. With Dortmund the 2nd highest scoring team with 74 goals and Bremen the 6th highest scoring team with 53 goals and only failing to score once this whole season and both teams being lackluster defensively as both have let in 40+ goals we may see an explosion of goals between the two sides.

Werder Bremen started 2019 with 14 straight games without a defeat, however during the past week they hit a 3 game losing streak though the first two losses came to league leaders Bayern 1-0 and then 2-3 in the cup to them as well, the defeat that followed was extremely poor as they were thumped 4-1 by Dusseldorf. It is safe to say that Bremen have had a dip in form lately.

As for Dortmund, after a slow start to 2019, they have managed to win 5 of their last 7 games but are coming off a very disappointing loss last week to rivals Schalke 2-4 in a game where they could’ve gone top of the league had they won. Defensively Dortmund have been very poor in these 7 games conceding 13 goals, but going forward they’ve been on fire with 16 goals. Dortmund’s games have been high scoring the whole season, but especially as of late.

Werder Bremen have only tasted 3 defeats from 15 games at home in the league this season and are yet to lose a home league game in 2019 and to extend to 2018 they have gone unbeaten in 8 straight games here (5W 3D) while scoring 20 goals. This is a very tough place for opponents to come and result results in.

Dortmund haven’t been quite as good away from home as they are at home. Dortmund have the 3rd best away record with 8W 4D 3L which is still a good record but nowhere near as good as they are at home. Dortmund’s away games tend to be far lower scoring as there has been 42 total goals scored in their away games compared to 72 in their home games. Dortmund’s away form recently has been disappointing as they won just 2 of their last 6 in the league on their travels (2D 2L).

The player to watch for Bremen is Max Kruse. 11 goals and 9 assists for the club this season in the league leading the side in both categories. Kruse did get on the scoresheet last week against Dusseldorf snapping a 5 game goal drought which may get him going again at scoring goals.

For Dortmund the man to watch is Jadon Sancho. 11 goals 14 assists now in Bundesliga and with Marco Reus out with a suspension, his presence becomes even more important for the visitors. Sancho has been in great form as of late scoring 3 and assisting 1 in his last 3 apps. Paco Alcacer is another player that we have to look out for as he’s the top scorer with 17 goals and has scored 4 in his last 4 apps.

Dortmund and Bremen have faced each other twice this season and both times were in Dortmund’s stadium as they beat Bremen 2-1 in the league, but lost to them on penalties in the DFB Pokal after an entertaining 3-3 affair. Looking at H2H between these sides further back it’s been a fixture that has provided us a lot of goals as previous 10 meetings have seen a crazy amount of 41 goals (4.1 per game) between Dortmund and Bremen!

Dortmund have had a lot of success playing Bremen away in recent years. 5 wins from last 7 visits (1D 1L) and they’ve scored 19 goals which is nearly 3 per game here in this run.

Dortmund are tipped as favourites to win this game at 2.10, while Bremen are a respectable 3.10. The draw is offered at 3.90. The odds are based on TonyBet.

Team News

Werder Bremen: Niklas Moisander is out for the hosts as he is suspended which could be a big blow given he’s a regular CB in the team. Davy Klaasen is a doubt while Milot Rashica will have to face late fitness tests to determine if he can play. The hosts may need to rotate the side if the latter two are definitely end up being out.

Dortmund: Marco Reus and Marius Wolf are both suspended after picking up red cards last week. Otherwise everyone are available.
