Young Boys vs Manchester United

UCL 2018-19 – BSC Young Boys vs Manchester United Match Preview

Mourinho’s Man Utd are currently carrying good momentum as they go away to Switzerland to begin their Champions League campaign against goal happy Swiss champions BSC Young Boys! Not Basel for once. Young Boys are on great form right now themselves 8 points clear at the top of their domestic league. However, United are a much different test compared to Swiss teams. It’s going to be a fiery night in Switzerland, the fans will be going nuts. So can United overcome that atmosphere and pick up what would be a very important win to start?

Key Facts

This is BSC Young Boys first time competing in the top European flight since 1986-87 when it was named the European Cup. This is their first Champions League appearance since it got rebranded in 1992. Expect a crazy atmosphere.

Young Boys currently hold a perfect 100% win record in their league winning 6 of 6.

Young Boys are very goal happy as they’ve scored 19 in 6 games. Just over 3 per game. As a whole they’re just a very entertaining side dating back to last season.

Young Boys have 2 tied top scorers. Fassnacht and Hoarau are tied with 4 goals each.

This is the first meeting between Young Boys and Man Utd ever.

Manchester United have lost their previous 2 matches in Switzerland to Basel in 2011 and 2017.

Manchester United have won 2 straight games since that appalling defeat to Tottenham. Both were away at Burnley and Watford.

Manchester United have actually been good going forward. They’ve scored 8 in 5 games. Bar the Spurs game they scored 2 goals in every other game.

Defensively, United have struggled conceding 8 goals in 8 games. Only kept one clean sheet.

Romelu Lukaku is United’s current top scorer with 4. He’s scored 6 in his last 4 competitive games including international games with Belgium.

This match will be played on artificial turf on which former English clubs like Spurs have struggled on. Could be an advantage for Young Boys.

Team News

BSC Young Boys: Young Boys will be missing a couple of midfielders for this match Jordan Lotomba and Sandro Lauper are both out with injuries. Miralem Sulejmani is fit to go however after suffering a concussion in the cup match recently. Elsewhere Young Boys have a healthy squad, main danger men this season Hoarau and Fassnacht are both available to play and they will be they biggest threat to United given their form to start the season. Expect a more cautious approach than usual from Young Boys given the level of opposition, but they’ll have their chances for sure.

Manchester United: Man Utd have some key absentees coming into this game. Valencia is out with an injury, also Rojo, Jones and Lingard haven’t travelled with the squad either. However, they did get some good news as Luke Shaw has returned from injury and is set to feature. We will probably see Shaw be back at LB and Ashley Young fill for Valencia at RB since Darmian is just too shaky at RB. Marcus Rashford is expected to feature as well as Lingard is out so he’ll probably fit in alongside Alexis and Lukaku to form a front 3. Rashford has started the season slow but his goals for England should give him confidence again. As for Jones replacement it will be Lindelof most likely again. Elsewhere there’s nothing to report both Lukaku and Pogba are healthy and they will be massive for United to open up BSC Young Boys. This game is huge for United as they have Valencia and Juventus in their group and these 3 points are essential.

Betting Tips and Previews

Manchester United are clearly the favourites here, on paper they are a far superior side however there are a few factors that may change your mind. First, they’re playing on a surface that they’re not used to, then they’re missing key players such as Lingard, Valencia and Jones. Furthermore their recent history playing in Switzerland is not good and Young Boys themselves are on great form. However, even with all of these factors we do see United scraping out a 1-2 win. All of these factors do cause concern for United, but because their team is so much better and are carrying some good momentum they should be able to pull through. Normally United would win this by 2-3 goals but they’ll have to sweat here. Man Utd to win is tipped at 1.70 if you want to go with just a win. BTTS – Yes is tipped at 1.80 which is another bet worth a look for since United can’t seem to keep a clean sheet and Young Boys score a ton of goals. United themselves will score for sure. Lukaku should be able to get on the scoresheet, he’s priced at 2.20 to score. So to summarise expect a tough game for United but they will find a way to overcome it with a 1-2 win and Lukaku will get on the scoresheet.
