Jake Delhomme, QB, Carolina Panthers: Delhomme has missed the past two games with a finger injury and is considered doubtful to return this week against the Vikings. Matt Moore would start again for Carolina, and he has been average at best so far as the Panthers have gone 1-1 with him under center. Carolina has opened as a 9-point underdog on Bodog’s NFL odds against a Viking team that could clinch the No. 2 seed in the NFC with a win.

Matthew Stafford, QB, and Kevin Smith, RB, Detroit Lions: Stafford missed last week’s loss to Baltimore with an injured shoulder and is fully expected to do the same this week against visiting Arizona. There’s no doubt that Smith, the Lions’ leading rusher, is done for the year. He tore ligaments in his knee in the loss to the Ravens and will be forced to undergo surgery that could limit him getting back until well into the 2010 season depending on what doctors find. The Lions are 12-point home dogs on Bodog’s NFL odds against the Cardinals.

Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals: Fitzgerald was hurt in Monday night’s ugly loss to the 49ers, but an MRI showed no structural damage in his knee. Fitzgerald, who is 9 yards short of reaching 1,000 yards receiving this season, has said he is fine and will play against the Lions. Arizona is a 12-point road favorite on Bodog’s NFL odds.

Mike Sims-Walker, WR, John Henderson, DT, Rashean Mathis, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars: It’s all hands on deck for Thursday’s must-win game against the Colts for Jacksonville. Mathis, the team’s best cover guy but who has missed the past four games with a groin injury, was limited in practice Tuesday, but he said he feels better than he did last week and hopes to play. He may be a game-time decision. Henderson, who sat out Sunday’s game against Miami with a shoulder injury, and wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker, who started but wasn’t at full speed, both expect to play. There is no line yet on this game on Bodog’s NFL odds.

Vince Young, QB, Tennessee Titans: Young, 6-1 as a starter this season, is officially day-to-day with a hamstring injury he suffered in last week’s win over the Rams. Young is likely to play this week against Miami but probably won’t be 100 percent, according to coach Jeff Fisher.

Bruce Gradkowski, QB, Oakland Raiders: Gradkowski, who had led the Raiders on a mini-resurgence in the past few games, is for sure out this week against the Broncos with torn ligaments in his knees and probably is done for the season. It’s expected that former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell, who has been terrible this season, will start against the Broncos, but as of this writing Raiders coach Tom Cable hasn’t ruled out going with No. 3 Charlie Frye. Oakland is a 14-point underdog on Bodog’s NFL odds against Denver.

Jeremy Maclin, WR, and Brian Westbrook, RB, Philadelphia Eagles: The rookie left last week’s win over the Giants with a foot injury and will not play this week against the 49ers. Maclin is second on the team with 46 receptions for 623 yards and four touchdowns. He could be replaced by former Kevin Curtis, who has been out since the second week of the season because of a knee injury. Westbrook, who has missed six of the past seven games with concussions, could return Sunday after practicing with the scout team last week. There is no line for the Eagles-49ers game yet on Bodog’s NFL odds.

Percy Harvin, WR, Minnesota Vikings: Harvin, who might be the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, had a recurrence of migraines last week and missed the game against the Bengals, but he is expected to practice Wednesday and play Sunday against Carolina on Sunday night. The Vikes have opened at -9 on Bodog’s NFL odds.

DeMarcus Ware, LB, Dallas Cowboys: Dallas also faces a must-win game and quite a challenge Saturday night in New Orleans against the unbeaten Saints. Ware, the Cowboys' best pass rusher and sack leader with nine, left last week’s loss to the Chargers on a stretcher with a neck strain but has improved each day since then so far. Ware wants to play and the Cowboys will need their best defensive player against the high-scoring Saints, but it probably will be a doctor’s call late in the week.

Late Sunday evening, many members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins no doubt were drinking champagne after they saw the unbeaten Colts go down to defeat against the New York Jets, thus assuring that the ’72 Fins will remain the NFL’s lone team to make it through an entire season unbeaten.

Of course the Colts, who already had clinched the AFC’s No. 1 seed, benched most of their starter in the third quarter Sunday with Indy up 15-10 at the time. As soon as QB Curtis Painter and not Peyton Manning came out on the field, you could just sense the air was let out of the Colts’ collective sails, and the crowd certainly didn’t like it. Of course the Jets rallied to win as the Indy offense was inept under Painter. Indy coach Jim Caldwell said a perfect season was never the goal and all the players toed the company line in their quotes, but their body language during the game was unmistakable – they wanted to win and have a chance at history. Caldwell simply wanted to ensure his players stayed healthy.

Perhaps Caldwell needs to look at recent history involving this team and resting starters in late-season meaningless games.

In 2007, Indy had home-field advantage wrapped up and benched its starters early (and also deactivated five starters entirely) in a Week 17 game against Tennessee. The result? A 16-10 Titans win that ended the Colts’ six-game winning streak and took away all their momentum. Two weeks later in the divisional round, Indy lost at home to San Diego.

In 2005, the Colts started 13-0 before losing to the Chargers. Indy, which had the No. 1 seed already wrapped up, then held out several starters the following two weeks, a loss to Seattle and a fortunate home win over a bad Arizona team that thoroughly outplayed Indianapolis. What happened two weeks later, with momentum gone, against the Steelers in the divisional round? A 21-18 Steeler upset win.

You sensing a trend here?

Look for Indy to actually be a road dog at Buffalo this week on Bodog’s NFL odds with zilch to play for and the winter elements to deal with — Indy’s inactive list could be chock full of starters for Week 17.

And would you bet on a team that ended the season with two straight losses to win a Super Bowl? I sure wouldn’t.

I am not a Colts fan anyways so it does not bother me at all. That being said, I think it was a no win situation for them. If they play the regulars and someone gets hurt then all the media that is freaking now would be wondering why they didn't rest there star players.

A futures bet on the Colts to win the Super Bowl back in August is looking pretty darn good right now. Same goes for the Chargers.......and make that a double for the Saints. Then again, a bet today on the Patriots to win ---- could also make things interesting.

We’re down to the NFL’s final eight, and injuries certainly can play a key role for the four teams that had to play last week, while the four that had byes are mostly healthy.

Joe Flacco, QB, Baltimore Ravens: Let there be no doubt that Flacco plays this weekend against the Colts, but he is nowhere near 100 percent with a hip quadriceps injury (but he’s not listed on the injury report). The Ravens didn’t need Flacco much against the Patriots, as his 34 passing yards Sunday at New England tied an NFL record for the fewest in a playoff victory during the Super Bowl era. But Baltimore certainly will need more passing this week against Indianapolis, which is 7-point favorite for Saturday night’s game on Bodog’s NFL odds.

Todd Heap, TE, Baltimore Ravens: Heap suffered a back stinger late in Sunday’s win over New England and is hurting but should start against the Colts as he has been practicing so far this week. Heap is a key part of Baltimore’s limited passing game, as he had 53 receptions for 593 yards and six touchdowns during the regular season.

Anquan Boldin, WR, Arizona Cardinals: Boldin was the biggest name to sit out last weekend’s playoff action (high ankle sprain), and all the Cards did was score 51 points without their No. 2 receiver. Reserve WRs Steve Breaston and Early Doucet were tremendous in helping to fill in for Boldin against the Packers. The Cards are now 6-1 (2-0 in the playoffs) in games that Boldin has missed over the last two seasons, fueling speculation that he will finally be traded this offseason. He remains very iffy for Saturday’s game with the Saints, but look for him to try and play if it all possible if for no other reason than to build up his value to other teams. He has yet to practice through Wednesday, however, and probably will be a game-time decision. Linebacker Geno Hayes also has yet to practice this week but played through his injury against the Packers. He, too, could be a game-time call. Arizona is a 7-point dog at New Orleans on Bodog’s NFL odds.

Pierre Thomas, RB, New Orleans Saints: The bye week was a great thing for the Saints, as they expect Thomas, their leading rusher, to play against the Cardinals on Saturday after missing the regular-season finale against Carolina because of three broken ribs. He has been practicing fully this week. The Saints are expecting the returns of tight end Jeremy Shockey (toe) and wide receiver Lance Moore (ankle). Shockey hasn’t played since Week 14 due to that turf toe. New Orleans is -7 against Arizona on Bodog’s NFL odds.

Marion Barber, RB, Dallas Cowboys: Barber, who was limited to three carries and four yards in Saturday's wild-card victory against Philadelphia, didn’t practice Wednesday because of a swollen bursa sac in his left knee, but the Cowboys are optimistic he can play this weekend against the Vikings. Fellow RB Tashard Choice has been practicing after it was feared he suffered a concussion against the Eagles – those tests turned out to be negative. Choice had 14 carries against the Eagles with Barber so limited – Felix Jones had a career-high 16 carries for Dallas. The Cowboys are +3 at Minnesota on Bodog’s NFL odds.

Steve Weatherford, P, New York Jets: This is a first, listing a punter among our key injuries, but these are the playoffs and any missing starter could be key. Weatherford missed last week’s win over the Bengals because of an irregular heartbeat condition that caused him to feel lightheaded before the game. Placekicker Jay Feely also handled the punting against Cincinnati. But Weatherford, who has had the non-life threatening condition since high school, will play this week against the Chargers. LB Bart Scott injured his ankle vs. the Bengals and might be a bit limited this week but will play against San Diego, which is -8 on Bodog’s NFL odds.

Shawne Merriman, LB, San Diego Chargers: The star pass-rusher hasn’t practiced since before Christmas (but has played in games) because of a torn plantar fascia in his left foot but says he feels better than he has in weeks thanks to the bye week and practiced Wednesday. He will start against the Jets.

The early Super Bowl action currently has been big time on the Colts, as we opened this at Indy -3.5 but it has moved to 6 as of this writing. For what it’s worth, four of the past six Super Bowls have been decided by four points or less. So that bodes well for the Saints backers. However, the past three teams making their Super Bowl debut have lost the big game (Cardinals, Seahawks, Panthers). Our total is currently at 56.5, and I expect that to rise with casual bettors expecting a shootout between Peyton Manning and Drew Brees. No Super Bowl total has exceeded that 56.5 number since XXXVIII when the Patriots beat the Panthers 32-29.

We have a few Super Bowl props currently posted at Bodog Sportsbook, but the majority of them will be released on Thursday. And of course we will have a few Pro Bowl props up as well, although we don’t expect much action on a game that is seeing top players bail on it left and right. Remember, too, that no Saints or Colts can play in the Pro Bowl because this year it is the week before the Super Bowl.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Pro Bowl being played before the Super Bowl this year? Think it's a good idea?

Losing the coin toss for overtime in the playoffs might be a little less painful next season.

Far more swiftly than anyone predicted, including the competition committee that made the recommendation, the NFL changed its overtime rules for postseason games Tuesday. Starting with the 2010 season, if a team wins the OT coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball. If the game becomes tied again after that next series, play will continue under the current sudden-death rules.

If the team winning the toss immediately scores a touchdown, however, the game is over.

Team owners voted 28-4 on Tuesday in favor of the proposal at the NFL meetings, with Minnesota, Buffalo, Cincinnati and Baltimore opposing the change.

"We knew it would be a hot-button issue when we got here," Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian said.

Its passage was helped by commissioner Roger Goodell's support, and by a spate of statistics indicating the coin toss had become too prominent in determining OT winners.

Since 1994, the team that won the overtime coin toss won the game 34 percent of the time on the first possession. Overall, the team that correctly called the coin toss won overtime games nearly 60 percent of the time in the last 15 years, or since kickoffs were moved back 5 yards to the 30.

Minnesota lost last season's NFL championship game in overtime to New Orleans. The Saints won the toss, drove downfield and kicked a field goal to win.

"I really believe the more you talk about the issue and see the stats and the change in our game, the more you see need for a change (in overtime)," said Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay, co-chairman of the competition committee. McKay and Polian, a member of the committee, cited the improvement in accuracy and distance for kickers as a major reason for the statistical differences. "Modified sudden death is an opportunity to make a pretty good rule ... even better. Statistically, it needed to change. It wasn't producing the 'fairest result.'"

There was no consideration of ditching sudden-death for another OT system. And while the new rule applies only for postseason games, McKay said even that could change. Several owners expressed interest in further discussions at their May meetings in Dallas.

"Our thought is to take our time and study it a bit and make sure everyone understands the implications there would be for that," McKay said.

Neither McKay nor Polian believes the Vikings-Saints game had much of a role in the vote to modify the rule.

"That's interesting," McKay said. "One of the teams that voted against was in the game and, last I checked, I don't think they won."

McKay and Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, the other competition committee co-chairman, said coaches quickly began favoring the change once they learned the details. It became such an important issue that the owners' vote was taken one day earlier than expected.

One of those coaches, Jack Del Rio of Jacksonville, did not favor the alteration, but owner Wayne Weaver supported it.

"I think what you're seeing (at the end of games) is the proficiency of offenses and quarterbacks who take their team down, and whoever has the ball last wins the game," he said. "All you're doing is extending that to OT. I'm not sure that's a good thing."

But it's a done thing, which might annoy the players' union.

The NFLPA has said it believes any change in overtime needs to be collectively bargained. Of course, the contract between the league and players expires next March. While the competition committee briefly discussed potential OT changes with the union in February, it was not consulted this week.
