Michael Vick opened the door to a possible early release from federal prison Tuesday by pleading guilty in Virginia to a state charge of dogfighting, a necessary step in his quest to return to the N.F.L.

(Vick - the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback now serving a 23-month federal term in Leavenworth, Kan., pleaded guilty in Surry County Circuit Court to one count of dogfighting and not guilty to one count of cruelty to animals, which the state then dropped.

The college football bowl season began on Saturday with four games, and it continues tonight. The New Orleans Bowl will be played opposite a big NFL match up, but it will still attract its share of viewers.

If this game follows the usual design of games between these teams, there will be a premium placed on conservatism. The Eagles don't have a major deep downfield receiving threat other than rookie WR DeSean Jackson, and the Giants are without their Pro Bowl star, the 6-5, 225-pound Plaxico Burress (suspended). So it's going to be a running attack built around short passing and concentration on the TE as a major receiver. Look for the Giants to strike early and often with the 6-4, 265-pound RB Brandon Jacobs to "tenderize" the middle of the Eagles' defense, followed by the faster Derrick Ward (5-10, 230) and the elusive (5-9, 200) Ahmad Bradshaw. /Cool widgets at statbeast. The National Football League is so concerned with its manufactured, hypocritical image that it hired a full-time lobbyist to work for it in pressuring Congress to maintain the UIGEA online gambling ban. The NFL, concerned that the prohibition of Internet gambling may soon be brought to an end, hired Jeff Miller, a top aide to Senator Herb Kohl, to represent its interests on Capitol Hill.

Politics has always been a contact sport, and the National Football League is suiting up for the game.

The National Football League has stepped up its attack on online gambling by hiring a full-time Washington-based lobbyist to pressure U.S. lawmakers on its behalf.

Jeff Miller, formerly a senior aide to Wisconsin Democrat Senator Herb Kohl, was hired to work as an in-house lobbyist at the league's new Washington office. The NFL has also set up a political action committee to make federal campaign contributions to increase its influence in the capital.

Miller was quoted by news agencies as saying that "We want to maintain the integrity of the game, and gambling threatens that." :1orglaugh

The NFL, always a bright beacon of morals in a blighted land, has decided to self-righteously step into the public morals debate. The NFL does not want a bill allowing online gambling, that is a current bill legalizing poker, to pass.

NFL why don't you mind your own damn business?

Michael Vick has been released from the Atlanta Falcons, he is free to do whatever he wants. Will he still try to be a star QB in the NFL?

If not, here are 5 career moves that he should take a shot at:

1. Prison guard, now that he knows how it works on “the inside”.

2. School bus driver, and tell the kids all of his football stories.

3. Join the WWE.

4. QB coach at some local high school. Good PR move.

5. One of the many analysts on NFL Prime Time. He can sit way off to the end.

Even though fantasy football and sports betting are two very different things, they certainly can help each other out. Both are all about up-to-date information, and there are certainly enough resources out there to keep up on both.

Managing your own fantasy team is a lot like managing your bets each week. The more you stay on top of information, the better informed you will be making a wager.

It's going to be another long year in Motown, but at least many Detroit fans won't have to see it – the team is struggling to sell tickets with Detroit getting hit extremely hard in this economy and the team being lousy on top of that. So many Lions home games might be blacked out.

Here is the Lions' 2009 schedule:

Sept. 13 at New Orleans Saints, 1 p.m.
Sept. 20 vs. Minnesota Vikings, 1 p.m.
Sept. 27 vs. Washington Redskins, 1 p.m.
Oct. 4 at Chicago Bears, 1 p.m.
Oct. 11 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers, 1 p.m.
Oct. 18 at Green Bay Packers, 1 p.m.
Week 7: Bye
Nov. 1 vs. St. Louis Rams, 1 p.m.
Nov. 8 at Seattle Seahawks, 4:05 p.m.
Nov. 15 at Minnesota Vikings, 1 p.m.
Nov. 22 vs. Cleveland Browns, 1 p.m.
Nov. 26 vs. Green Bay Packers, 12:30 p.m.
Dec. 6 at Cincinnati Bengals, 1 p.m.
Dec. 13 at Baltimore Ravens, 1 p.m.
Dec. 20 vs. Arizona Cardinals, 1 p.m.
Dec. 27 at San Francisco 49ers, 4:05 p.m.
Jan. 3 vs. Chicago Bears, 1 p.m.

Strength of schedule: 21st (opponents combined to go 119-136-1, .467, in 2008)
Projected record: 2-14
Bodog over/under total: 4 ½
Bodog odds to win Super Bowl XLIV: 100/1

Before you watch Sunday’s Hall of Fame Game, take a moment to remember the past on Saturday.

The Hall of Fame’s honor roll will grow to 253 with the enshrinement of Bob Hayes, Randall McDaniel, Bruce Smith, Derrick Thomas, Ralph Wilson, Jr., and Rod Woodson.

Hayes, while playing for the Dallas Cowboys, proved a track man could succeed in a contact sport. McDaniel had a streak of 202 consecutive starts and earned 12 straight Pro Bowl berths.

Smith was a dominant player during his 19 playing seasons with the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins. Thomas, a member of the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1990s, was named first-team All-AFC seven times during an eight-year stretch.

Wilson, Jr. was the man responsible for reintroducing pro football to Western New York when he formed the Buffalo Bills in 1959. Finally, Woodson recorded 71 interceptions; 1,483 interception return yards; 2,362 punt return yards; and 17 touchdowns.

NFL quarterbacks are set to make a huge comeback this season, you have to start with Tom Brady. The only thing that kept him from dominating the league again last year was an injury in Week 1. Assuming he stays healthy, Brady is going to light it up again.

No wonder he is listed at +450 to end the year with the most gross passing yards and listed at +450 to be the MVP.

Vince Young is a good bet to bounce back. Young only played in three games last season, and if he can return to the form he had in his rookie season he could be the comeback story of the year.

Finally, everyone is wondering what Michael Vick will do with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is making the biggest comeback of all and it is still a longshot to work out.
