Hockey is back and that means starting to think about who will win the Stanley Cup in June. Oddsmakers are once again liking the Detroit Red Wings (+450) and Pittsburgh Penguins (+500) to be heavy favorites.

Thanks to a recent deal for Dany Heatley, the San Jose Sharks should be in the mix as well. They are listed at +800.

Two up-and-coming teams join the Sharks at +800. The Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks are ready to go to that next level if the big boys falter.

The Philadelphia Flyers (+1500) and Anaheim Ducks (+1600) could also be steals if they can get hot.

The absolute longshots include the Colorado Avalanche (+8000), the Atlanta Thrashers (+10000), and the lowly New York Islanders (+15000).

The regular season begins on Oct. 1 and there will be a few surprise teams that jump out early. The trick is betting on one who can keep it going all season.

A federal judge has sentenced a Silicon Valley financier to more than 8 years in prison for bilking banks and investors out of millions of dollars in an attempt to buy a pro hockey team and finance a lavish lifestyle.

William "Boots" Del Biaggio III was sentenced Tuesday in San Francisco. He pleaded guilty earlier this year to a felony charge of forging financial documents to obtain $110 million in loans from several banks and two NHL owners.

The judge also ordered him to pay more than $67.4 million in restitution. His interest in the hockey team will be sold and the proceeds distributed to his victims.

Who should be the new Caps Captain?
1. Alex Ovechkin
2. Brooks Laich
3. Mike Knuble
4. Matt Bradley
5. Other ?

Ovechkin would be my first choice but Knuble would be my second but I am pretty sure that Ovie is going to get it and will be Captain for a long time.

The Washington Capitals unveiled Alex Ovechkin as their captain during warmups. Then his teammates helped usher in the new era by beating the Montreal Canadiens, 4-2, at Verizon Center.

Looking to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 11 games, the Ottawa Senators also will try to snap a four-game slide against the Vancouver Canucks, who continue their brutal six-week road trip tonight.

NHL hockey betting odds have the Canucks listed as -118 road favorites.

Ottawa extended its run with a 4-2 win over Buffalo on Wednesday. Jason Spezza had two goals and an assist for the Senators, who haven’t lost since a 6-1 defeat at Atlanta on Jan. 12 and have outscored their opponents 34-12 during the winning streak.

Now the Senators will face the best from the Northwest. Vancouver took both meetings last season and has won six of the last seven.

Henrik Sedin had two goals and two assists in two wins against the Senators last season. Daniel had a goal and three assists.

Vancouver hasn’t lost to Ottawa since falling 2-1 on March 13, 2004.

The NHL’s 30 general managers had the opening day of their annual meeting filled with information on concussions and various types of checks. The GMs have been called to deliberate on the issue as more ugly head shots are making the news. Many fans and players have voiced their concern on the issue and are expecting the GMs to come up with a recommendation after their meetings wrap up this week.............

Its a brewtal sport and I dont think they will ever get rid of the Cross-check. The head shots are unfortunate and sometimes unavoidable. Thanks god for plastic and helmets:thumbsup

What is really sad is it is going to take another players death to actually get this problem taken care of. I am a huge Hockey fan but am really starting to hate what players do to each other. No respect......

NHL's Board of Governors Unanimously Approves Hit to the Head Rule!

The NHL has been being attacked lately for being light on blind side hit's to the head suspensions. Latest case being an 8 game suspension James Wisniewski received for a blind side crushing hit to the head he landed on Chicago Black Hawks defenseman Brent Seabrook.

Seabrook with out the puck and not looking up received a hit from Wisniewski skating full speed then jumped with his elbows up landed the blow on Seabrook. Seabrook's body and facial expression were frozen as he went straight down to the ice.

It's get's better as Wisniewski and Seabrook were teammates for two season in Chicago. Wisniewski said he sent him a text the next day apologizing for the hit and didn't get a reply.

Chicago's head coach Joel Quenneville was furious over the attack and said you can kill a guy when you hit him without the puck, it's the most dangerous hit in the NHL. Also stating that was intent and he wanted to hurt him.

This is not the first time Wisniewski has been charged with this type of hit. A repeat offender and the NHL comes up with an eight game suspension. The Ducks are not going to make the playoffs this season they could of made a better statement with these types of hits by sitting Wisniewski for the rest of the season.

Well it took the NHL a week after the dangerous hit to the head to make up a new rule.

The Board or Governor's unanimously approved a rule prohibiting "a lateral, back-pressure or blind-side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact." Timing and details of implementation are being worked on by the NHL's Hockey Operations Department in conjunction with representatives of the National Hockey League Players' Association. Potshot Hockey opens a new class of games based on Japanese Pachinko, a vertical style of pinball machine which has gained enormous popularity in Asia. Between 40 and 50 million people play these pinball games and as many as 30 million are devoted players. The games are unique and include state of the art physics engines. :thumbsup
