The hits just keep on coming for Canadian online gambling operator Amaya Gaming, which is being sued in US federal court over its growing insider trading scandal.

On Thursday, Maryland-based investor Harvey Weisman filed a proposed class action complaint in the US Southern District of New York (SDNY), alleging that Amaya failed to disclose the shenanigans of its embattled CEO David Baazov, who announced this week that he was taking an indefinite leave of absence from the company.

Baazov, along with another Amaya exec and a former financial advisor, were charged with insider trading last week, while 13 other individuals – including Baazov’s older brother Josh – had their trading privileges suspended by the securities regulator in Amaya’s home province of Quebec over sketchy Amaya-related trading activity dating back to 2010.

Weisman says Amaya had a duty to disclose Baazov’s trading activity and also failed to properly disclose deficiencies in its internal controls. Weisman claims that false and/or misleading statements by Amaya execs caused the company’s share price to be artificially inflated before shedding over one-fifth its value following last week’s AMF charges.

In addition to Amaya and Baazov, Weisman’s suit also lists CFO Daniel Sebag as a defendant. While not included in last week’s charges, Sebag was identified as a person of interest when the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) launched its investigation in late 2014, several months after Amaya’s $4.9b acquisition of the Rational Group, the parent company of PokerStars.

As with the flood of daily fantasy sports class action suits that followed last fall’s data leak scandal, multiple law firms in different US states are actively beating the bushes looking for aggrieved investors who purchased Amaya shares on the Nasdaq exchange between June 8, 2015 and March 23, 2016, in case they want to add their names to the roster of plaintiffs.

In the US, class action lawsuits are to companies like barnacles are to boats: not likely to cause the vessel to sink but an annoyance that needs to be scraped away all the same. This is just one more negative distraction for Amaya, with a degree of severity somewhere between the erosion of its core poker customer base and mounting questions as to which Baazov brother is actually calling the shots.

On Friday, March 4, the body of self-made millionaire Koen Everink was found in his home in Bilthoven, Netherlands. The former director of the travel agency Eliza Was Here was stabbed to death.

Twenty days later, on March 24, Mark de J., tennis coach of Dutch tennis pro Robin Haase, was arrested at Schiphol airport in connection with the homicide. At the time of the arrest, de J. was on his way back from Miami, where Haase was scheduled to play in the ATP Masters 1000. Hasse ended up not participating in the competition because of a knee injury.

Prior to the arrest, de J. spoke to the authorities and explained that he had been watching a Dutch premier league match between Feynoord and AZ at Everink's place. He reported that he had seen suspicious characters in the house's surroundings, but his claim raised suspicion with police investigators. De J. submitted his phone to a search but, was allowed to travel to the United States with Haase.
Is an €80,000 Poker Debt the Motive?

On March 26, Dutch newspaper Het Algemeen Dagblad was the first to connect De J. to online poker.

"Mark de J. had until recently been active in online poker," the newspaper wrote. "It appears he was playing for large sums of money. On an online poker forum, he offered large sums of money that he wanted to exchange to a different electronic currency. There are different types of electronic wallets, such as Skrill and Neteller, which allow for online payments. In the last year, De J. tried to exchange large sums of money, ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 per instance. Usually, he tried to swap Skrill or Neteller funds for funds on PokerStars."

I doubt that it's only a poker dept. There must be something else too.

PokerStars NJ jumped to the lead almost from the outset of its March 21 launch, giving weight to the theory that American players sorely miss the action on the virtual tables of the world’s top poker site. The ring-fenced New Jersey market is the next best thing for those fortunate enough to be traveling to or residing in the Garden State.

New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market set another revenue record in March, spurred by the first contributions from Amaya Gaming’s PokerStars brand.

According to figures released Wednesday by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), New Jersey-licensed sites reported total revenue of $15.5m in March, nearly 18% higher than the same month last year and $800k higher than the previous revenue record set in February 2016.

Pokerstarsnj-com didn’t officially launch until March 21, but its arrival provided the first double-digit rise in the market’s poker vertical in a dog’s age. The PokerStars site generated nearly $598k in poker revenue, which pushed the market’s total poker take to $2.46m, up 10.5% over March 2015, and around 25% more than February 2016. The market’s dominant casino vertical improved 19.3% year-on-year to $13.05m.

The market-leading Borgata Casino Hotel sites generated total revenue of $4.22m, essentially flat from February’s total. The Borgata’s poker revenue was down only slightly to $1.03m, while casino revenue nudged slightly upward to $3.19m.

Sites operating on Caesars Interactive Entertainment’s platform reported total revenue of $3.16m, up from $3m in February. The gains came courtesy of the casino vertical, which improved by around $230k to $2.3m, while PokerStars’ arrival caused CIE’s poker revenue to fall $100k to $830k.

Among the casino-only sites, the Tropicana was up around $120k to $3.17m while the Golden Nugget fell around $50k to $3.07m. Resorts Casino Hotel’s online casino fell around $40k to $1.28m, which, when combined with PokerStars’ poker haul, brought Resorts’ total revenue for the month to just under $1.88m.

While PokerStars was only operational for part of March, the fact that the Borgata poker sites were essentially unaffected by the new competitor’s arrival, coupled with the moderate poker decline at the CIE sites, will have Amaya execs celebrating having achieved their goal of growing the state’s online poker business.

It remains to be seen how long PokerStars’ New Jersey honeymoon will last. Traffic reports suggest the bloom is already off the rose, with average players falling one-sixth in April since the site’s much-publicized launch, although the numbers are still around 10% higher than its closest rival, the WSOP/888 network. Hopes will be high that PokerStars’ upcoming SCOOP tournament will restore some of the site’s (and the market’s) momentum.

PokerStars may have only been fully operational for a few days within the month of March in New Jersey, but the brand still impacted the online gambling revenues of the state in a major way. Online poker revenues were increased due to PokerStars offering their services, with the brand earning close to $600,000 within less than two weeks of being in operation.

With the help of PokerStars, New Jersey actually set a new record for the month of March in regards to online gambling earnings. The regulators of the state announced this week that March earned $2,461,064 which is just over 10% from March of last year, in online poker earnings. The overall gambling earnings of the state hit $15,507,459 which is 17.8% more than the total gaming revenues earned the year previous.

When taking a look at the first three months of gaming in the state, New Jersey has earned just over $44 million with online poker peer-to-peer gaming reaching over $6.6 million. Both are an increase when comparing year-over-year.

PokerStars soft launched in the state on the 16th of March and then launched fully on the 21st. PokerStars works with Resorts Casino to offer online poker gaming, with online gaming totals for Resorts Digital seeing a nice increase in March, coming in at $1,878,097 which is much higher than the $154,071 that was earned in March of last year.

PokerStars was very successful after launching in the state, taking over as the most played site within one week when comparing cash game numbers with other operators including the WSOP and Party Poker. It will be interesting to watch as PokerStars continues to offer online poker gaming and how they impact the overall revenues in regards to New Jersey online poker as well as overall gaming revenues.

PokerStars made news in the past few weeks when it launched online poker and casino games in New Jersey. And just after that launch, PokerStars announced that it was partnering with that state’s chapter of Autism Speaks for the month of April and going forward.

Many might be unfamiliar with the charitable ways of online poker companies, but players have known for years that PokerStars and other operators are quick to step up and help when an opportunity presents itself. Poker players are known for their generosity when charities are involved.

PokerStars chose Autism Speaks for a partnership in New Jersey because of its notoriety as a premier organization promoting research and advocacy for autism and those dealing with it.

PokerStars’ corporate charitable program, Helping Hands, is now a premier sponsor of Autism Speaks to promote awareness. To kick off the campaign, PokerStars changed its red spade logo to a blue one, the color indicating support of autism.

One of the reasons it came to the attention of PokerStars is because Team PokerStars Pro Chris Moneymaker is open about his family being touched by autism. “Our family has been and is currently affected by this disorder, and as a dedicated member of the PokerStars family, I am personally touched by the brand’s decision to support a cause near to my heart.” Autism Speaks and PokerStars are already planning a black tie gala as a fundraiser in 2017 and numerous other initiatives this year. The fundraising will likely start before the 2016 summer in an effort to help local communities in New Jersey affected by autism, as well as to promote awareness to others.
Online Poker No Stranger to Causes

PokerStars’ Helping Hands has been involved in charities for the better part of the past decade. From raising money to help victims of natural disasters like hurricanes and typhoons to supporting its players when issues affect their lives, PokerStars and Full Tilt have raised millions of dollars for those in need.

Just last year, PokerStars partnered with Prostate Cancer UK to host “Lads Night In,” which was a series of home games to raise funds for prostate cancer research and awareness led up by Team Pro Jake Cody. PokerStars’ parent, Amaya, joined with Right to Play, a global organization that uses sports and games to help impoverished children learn and overcome the effects of poverty, disease, and war. Cody and Fatima Moreira de Melo led those efforts to raise funds.

PartyPoker also stepped up when it got comfortable in New Jersey, playing host to the annual fundraiser tournament to benefit the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The same site also launched a 2013 campaign to “Restore the Shore” to help raise funds for damage caused by Hurricane Sandy to the Jersey Shore. There were live and online tournaments held to benefit the cause throughout 2014.

Microgaming, parent company of Microgaming Poker Network, launched a holiday campaign this past December to raise money for 12 charities in four regions of the globe, with donations going to the foundations that garnered the most votes.

Other companies have participated in fundraising campaigns, both local and global, in the past decade as well. The partnerships are positive for all players who participate, as they help others and learn about how diseases, poverty, and natural disasters hurt people in all areas of the world.

Of course, charitable outreach is a great way to build positive relationships in new communities, as online poker companies have done in New Jersey, but the reasons are not nearly as relevant as the good that comes from those partnerships.

PokerStars are forgetting their Amaya woes for one evening only as they leverage the super stardom of Jason Somerville to host their first live/online combo event since returning to New Jersey after a five-year hiatus.

The world didn’t end when lawmakers booted online gaming companies out of America in 2011, but it did change. Back then, PokerStars were duking it out with Full Tilt Poker, in a bid to become the undisputed market leader. These days PokerStars own Full Tilt, and is the dominant global market leader with no indication of that changing in the near future despite customer satisfaction seemingly at an all-time low.

PokerStars entry into the New Jersey market came 2.5 years later than their competitors, and yet according to several media sources, it took them less than a week to become the most prominent member of the new club. They aim to increase that reach with a little help from one of the most influential men in poker.

The signing of Jason Somerville as a member of PokerStars Team Pro is the most significant deal since Daniel Negreanu joined the team. He was the first poker player to grow his personal brand on the live streaming platform Twitch, and recently surpassed the 10 million total views mark.

Somerville’s show is called Run It UP! and over the years he has teamed up with west coast parties such as Peppermill to join fans in a series of Run It Up! live events. It’s this angle that PokerStars are using to advance their footing in the east coast market.

The first Run It Up! live event to take place on the east coast will be held at the Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, May 14. The evening is being billed as PokerStars celebratory return to New Jersey and carries the name: PokerStars Run It UP Resorts Rumble.

Somerville will be streaming live on Twitch that entire weekend, as well as competing in the events, and taking part in specially organized Q&A sessions with other members of PokerStars Team pro such as Vanessa Selbst, Jennifer Shahade, Chris Moneymaker, and Liv Boeree.

The Main Event will be $30 buy-in online events where players will compete live on electronic devices rigged up in the Resorts Casino. Players can qualify for the event online at PokerStarsNJ-com. There will be a special after poker VIP party in The Landshark Bar & Grille Restaurant.

It’s going to be interesting to see how PokerStars New Jersey presence settles over the next few months. As players gear up for the World Series of Poker (WSOP), online numbers generally dwindle, although PokerStars will be rolling out their first New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) next month where you can expect to see more cash handed out than at any other time since online poker returned to the state 2.5 years ago.

Up and running in New Jersey for just a little over five weeks hasn’t deterred PokerStars NJ from making its inaugural NJSCOOP festival next month the regulated Garden State’s richest online poker series ever.

PokerStars New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker has guaranteed $1,100,000 in prize money over 54 tournaments taking place May 15-29. The 15 days of action will feature high and low buy-ins of the same 27 events.

The announced prize pool of NJSCOOP edges out last month’s Garden State Super Series IV hosted by Partypoker NJ and Borgata Poker. Prize money of GSSS IV was promoted as more than $1 million.

Online qualifiers to the Main Events and other tournaments on the NJSCOOP schedule are already underway at PokerStarsNJ.com. Satellites start as low as $1.

Many poker players on PokerStars, the world's largest real-money online poker room, received refunds to their accounts as a result of playing against opponents in lottery-style Spin & Go tournaments who were violating the site's terms of service.

Although no details were provided for which games and opponents created the issue to begin with, those refunded received the following message via email from the PokerStars Game Integrity Team, notifying them about the refund, how to see the amount, and the importance of the site's integrity.

The situation came to light at the end of April after some of the players receiving refunds shared the good news with the poker communities at TwoPlusTwo, TiltBook, and elsewhere. The amount of the refunds ranged from a few dollars to four-digit sums.

Well good thing some got their money back, I wonder if anyone slipped through.

I assume "Violating the site's terms of service" is another expression for cheating.

But in the end, what do I know!

New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market continued its record setting pace in April, as Amaya Gaming’s PokerStars site assumed dominance of the state’s online poker market.

Figures released Thursday by the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) show total online revenue hit $17m in April, up nearly 34% from the same month last year and $1.5m more than the DGE reported in March 2016. April’s total marks a new revenue benchmark, the fourth straight month of record-setting totals in 2016.

As usual, the casino vertical claimed the lion’s share ($14.4m) of the total, rising 34.4% from April 2015. But the first full month’s activity by Pokerstarsnj-com pushed online poker revenue up 30.4% to $2.6m. The sequential gain was more modest, up only around $150k from March, during which Stars was only operational for 10 days.

Stars is partnered with Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino Hotel, and the Resorts Digital Gaming partnership reported total online revenue of just under $3.5m in April, nearly twice the sum reported in March. Resorts’ casino revenue was $2.3m, around $1m more than in March, while poker revenue doubled to $1.18m.

Stars’ poker total easily eclipsed previous frontrunner the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, whose online operations include (for the moment) GVC Holdings’ PartyPoker brand. The Borgata sites earned a total of just under $4m, with casino games claiming around $3.2m (flat month-to-month) and poker adding $745k (down around 25%).

Stars also dealt a blow to Caesars Interactive Entertainment’s poker sites, which include WSOP-com and 888-com. CIE New Jersey’s poker revenue fell one-fifth from March’s total to $664k, while casino revenue improved nearly 9% to $2.5m.

As for the state’s two licensed casino-only sites, the Golden Nugget reported revenue of $3.3m (+10% from March) while the Tropicana earned $3.05m (-4%).

PokerStars’ strong showing in New Jersey will give Amaya execs something to crow about when they discuss their Q1 earnings report this coming Monday (16), having succeeded in both growing the poker market and topping its competitors. However, it remains to be seen how long Stars will be staying in New Jersey, given the DGE’s stated position regarding its licensees’ activity in so-called ‘grey’ markets and the subsequent declarations of governments in Australia and Russia that appear to put PokerStars on the wrong side of the law. Again.

Once upon a time, the PokerStars Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) was an upstart online poker series, trying to give poker players their big tournament series fix while they waited for the giant World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) to kickoff later in the year. SCOOP is an upstart no more; it is now officially the largest online poker series on the face of the Earth.

SCOOP began on May 8th and will finish up tonight as the $100 “Low” and $1,000 “Mid” Main Events run to their conclusion. Registration has closed on each, though, so we now know that a total of $90,984,283.44 was accumulated in prize pools across all 56 events (with three tournaments in each event, that is 168 tournaments in all). This number is the largest combined prize pool for an online poker tournament series in history, smashing the previous record of $81,222,158.66, set by the 2014 SCOOP.

“This record-breaking prize pool is testament to the enduring popularity of online poker,” said PokerStars’ Director of Corporate Communications, Eric Hollreiser, in a press release. “It’s also a result of the talented people and hard work exhibited by everyone at PokerStars, from the poker room tournaments team who put the schedule together, to the customer support teams helping our players get the most out of their experience.”

All three Main Events also set records:

• 2016 SCOOP $10,000 High Main Event: 824 players, $8,000,001.76 prize pool (previous record 694 players, $6,940,000 prize pool in 2015 SCOOP)
• 2016 SCOOP $1,000 Mid Main Event: 5,026 players, $4,786,661.88 prize pool (previous record 4,238 players, $4,238,000 prize pool in 2015 SCOOP)
• 2016 SCOOP $100 Low Main Event: 24,591 players, $2,255,978.34 prize pool (previous record 23,045 players, $2,304,500 prize pool in 2013 SCOOP)

The High Main Event, the highlight tournament of the series, had a $4 million guaranteed prize pool and guaranteed $1 million for first place, two marks that were easily eclipsed. That tournament was completed earlier today as the final nine players fought to the finish. Player “raidalot” from the United Kingdom won the crown and $1,468,000.88, beating Romania’s “Nolez7” ($1,048,000.23) heads-up. A total of 99 places were paid with a min-cash of $18,400.

As this article is being written, the Mid Main Event is down to just two players: “Jymaster11” from Mexico and “Educa-p0ker” from the UK. The Low Main Event is also heads-up in a battle of Brazilians: “mmleandro” and “nillolok.” As I type this, that tourney is almost in a dead heat.

Shaun “shaundeeb” Deeb is in first place on the overall SCOOP leader board and is in position to win the leader board trophy and $20,000 cash. 2015 SCOOP Player of the Year Jason Mercier is in second place.

After some early reluctance, PokerStars has rolled-out Zoom Poker in the New Jersey online poker market. The fast-fold format went live across a swatch of No-Limit Hold’em stakes earlier this month.

Fast-fold formats have had trouble finding their footing in New Jersey, due primarily to challenges posed by the market’s hard population cap.

Whether or not PokerStars NJ can buck the trend remains to be seen, but there appears to be reason for cautious optimism.

New Jersey online gambling sites reported revenue spiking over 40% in June despite a relatively poor showing by the state’s licensed poker sites.

Figures issued Wednesday by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) showed the state’s regulated online gambling market generated overall revenue of $16.4m, 40.6% higher than the same month last year. However, the sum is $100k less than the market generated in May 2016.

The casino vertical definitely did its part, rising 46.8% year-on-year to $14.4m. Poker, on the other hand, rose a comparatively tiny 7.3% to just under $2m.

Poker’s traditional summer doldrums were in full evidence, as the vertical’s contribution was off around $600k from May 2016’s figure. Poker’s tepid performance is all the more striking given that Amaya Gaming’s PokerStars brand wasn’t operational in July 2015.

PokerStars, which operates in conjunction with Resorts Digital Gaming, posted poker revenue of $778k, a better performance than any other New Jersey-licensed poker operator. But the sum marks PokerStars’ lowest full month total since the site launched in late March and well off its April peak of $1.18m.

As usual, the market-leading Borgata sites powered by GVC Holdings ruled the revenue roost with just under $3.8m, with all but $589k coming via its casino vertical. Caesars Interactive Entertainment held on to its runner-up spot with just over $3m, all but $600k of which came from casino.

The state’s two casino-only sites had good months, with the Golden Nugget earning $3.5m, about $150k more than the Tropicana. Resorts Digital Gaming’s casino vertical earned just over $1.9m, which, added with its poker earnings, brought its total revenue to $2.7m
