Romania’s National Office for Gaming has posted a list of 48 online gaming sites that it says are operating without authorization in the country. They have also identified NetBet, Stanley Bet, and Winmasters as holding current interim licenses. William Hill does not appear on either list as its last day of operations in the country was June 1.
Some reports suggest that Bet365, PokerStars, and others are negotiating to pay back-taxes on up to five years of unlicensed operations and apply for interim licenses. Those licenses would allow operation through the calendar year and then allow applications for new 10-year licenses.
Many have called the retro-active tax a “shake-down” as the scope and breadth of the levy is currently unknown. Others such as operator William Hill simply left the market after taking a major hit on the new UK point of consumption tax. The tax along with £14m in losses in the Premier League signaled the betting giant’s “worst week ever” in late April.
Among the casinos listed on the Romanian government website as operating illegally are several Casino Rewards properties such as blackjackballroom, along with bodog, carbon poker, clubworld, intertops, lasvegasusa, and slotland.
